Do you love horses? Do you love helping people? Little Bits Therapeutic Riding Association (LBTRA) needs volunteers to assist in our programing! LBTRA has been providing therapeutic riding to children and adults with disabilities since 1975. Each year we have over 195 riders take part in our programs. We are a charitable organization and are only able to run with the assistance of our amazing volunteers.
As a volunteer there are many roles you can take. During the one-hour classes, there are volunteers who lead the horses, and those who walk alongside and provide physical and/or cognitive support to the riders. These side walkers assist the rider in following the directions of the instructor, occasionally providing hand-over-hand assistance, or physical holds to help the rider remain balanced. Additionally, we may need some assistance in the barn collecting horses from their paddocks, grooming them, and tacking them for classes. No experience is needed to volunteer, just a willingness to learn!
A lot of our volunteers start with our organization for the horses, but the majority will say that they stay for the riders and for the environment with the other volunteers. Little Bits is a great place to get out, get some exercise, and meet lots of new people from all walks of life.
If you are interested in learning more about our organization, or would like to volunteer, please contact Janine at volunteers@littlebits.ca!
