Reporting to the Academic(s) in Residence, a Peer Tutor is part of a team of volunteers responsible for
providing one-on-one academic support for Lister residents for one or more particular course(s). Peer tutors
are expected to volunteer 2 hours per week to participate in one or all of the following types of tutoring:
one-to-one, drop-in, and multi-student tutor sessions.
? Model positive academic habits and maintain satisfactory academic standing throughout the duration
of their position
? Build and refine student knowledge through questions and conversation
? Attend and tutor at one two-hour peer tutor session per week or its equivalent of other academic
programming
? Check scheduling system, arrive on time, and prepared for all sessions
? Maintain confidentiality at all times
? Refer students to appropriate services if problems identified are not academic; i.e. counselling and
clinical services, financial aid office, student accessibility services, etc.
? Advise Head Peer Tutor(s) of any schedule change at least 24 hours in advance
? Work with Residence Services to provide feedback on the Peer Tutor program and opportunities for
future growth
? Display attitudes and behaviours consistent with those of a positive role model for the community
? Uphold the Residence Community Standards, the Residence Agreement, the House Rules, and
the Code of Student Behaviour
? Display attitudes and behaviors that are equitable and fair towards other community members
? Communication: Respond to email communication at least once every 24 hours
? Attend and complete required training
? Attend scheduled meetings
Qualifications:
You must have successfully completed the class(es) you wish to tutor
? You must have received at least a B in the class(es) you wish to tutor
? You must be available for a minimum of two-three hours per week
? If you wish to tutor a subject you have not successfully taken, you must provide supporting
documentation explaining this
? Experience living in UAlberta Residence is considered an asset, but is not required
? Maintain full-time student status at the University of Alberta in Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 with a
minimum 3.0 GPA.
? Not engage in any behaviour or activity while living in residence that damages the reputation of the
residence community, Residence Services or the University of Alberta.
? Agree to behave according to the expectations listed above, the Community Standards, the Residence
Agreement, the House Rules, and the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Policy. Failure to do so will
result in the possible termination of the role.
Training:
Peer Tutors complete 3 hours of training before beginning the role.
Benefits:
At the end of their completed term, all volunteers will also be provided a record of their volunteer hours and will have the opportunity to request references from
their supervisor. Successful candidates, if desired, will be offered the option of living in Lister Centre (Note that all residents are responsible for the associated costs of their community).
