Description:
The role of the volunteer navigator is to journey with persons (aged 55+) as they travel the long and winding road of declining health. A volunteer navigator is a listening, supportive presence who works with individuals and their families to facilitate connections, independence, and promote quality of life. By establishing relationships with the client(s), the volunteer learns who these individuals are and what is important to them in order to navigate the changes and needs that arise as they seek to live long and well in the place they call home. Transportation reimbursement available.
Qualifications:
Volunteer navigators should be excellent problem solvers and know their community in order to locate services and resources that may benefit the client. Volunteer navigators usually have related volunteer or work experience with older adults or community services.
To be a Nav-CARE volunteer, you will need the following:
- A Volunteer Application Form
- Police Information Check including a Vulnerable Sector Check
- Nav-CARE Training & Certificate of Completion
Training:
Completion of the Nav-CARE training course (approximately 3 to 6 hours to complete all 6 modules) and recurring volunteer meetings (1-2 hours monthly) are required for this position.

Volunteer navigators often begin their work with clients before they need home-based healthcare services. This proactive approach enables supportive care to be provided early on which enables clients to remain independent for as long as possible. Nav-CARE clients say that volunteers make their lives “more livable.”
