Dear President Samarasekera,
I would like to express my deep concern and disappointment with the proposed changes to Lister Centre posted on the University of Alberta's website on July 23. The proposal, and the manner in which it was communicated, shows a callous disregard for student input at a residence whose culture and reputation exists thanks to the engaged students it has housed over the past 50 years.
Although the merits of the proposal itself are dubious, the process by which it was enacted is even more concerning. The University of Alberta purportedly prides itself on the involvement of its students, yet it failed to elicit any feedback from student representatives on a proposal that will vastly change the residence experience for current and future generations of Lister residents.
This proposal indicates a severe lack of consideration for how the LHSA's operations will be affected. The LHSA's staff – FCs, RAs and VPs – are being poached by the University with a monetary incentive, and therefore severely compromising its ability to provide the social and academic support that it has done successfully for years. These types of malicious practices should not be expected from a university that aims to join the world's elite institutions of higher education.
In your position as President of the University of Alberta, I strongly urge you to halt any current progress on this proposal until proper consultation can occur with the affected student groups. I thank you for your attention to these concerns and look forward to your swift response.
Sincerely,
(your name)
